How To Care For Your Rug.

Taking proper care of your area rugs can extend their life and keep them looking fresh and clean. Here are some tips to help you maintain your area rugs:

Regular Maintenance

1. Vacuuming: Regularly vacuum your rugs to remove dust and dirt. For high-traffic areas, vacuum at least once a week. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brushless suction head for delicate rugs to avoid damage. We do not recommend using a beater bar on most area rugs.

2. Shaking and Beating: For smaller rugs, take them outside and shake them to remove loose dirt and then vacuum as well.

Spot Cleaning

3. Immediate Attention: Clean spills and stains immediately to prevent them from setting. Blot (don’t rub) the spill with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible.

4. Mild Detergents: Use a mild detergent or a rug cleaner specifically designed for your rug’s material. Test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t damage the rug.

5. Blotting Technique: When spot cleaning, blot the area with a clean cloth and avoid rubbing, which can spread the stain and damage the fibers.

Deep Cleaning

6. Professional Cleaning: Have your rugs professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months, or more often if they are in high-traffic areas. Professional cleaners can effectively remove deep-seated dirt and stains.

7. DIY Deep Cleaning: If you prefer to clean your rugs yourself, use a carpet cleaning machine suitable for your rug type. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the rug is thoroughly dried to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Rug Placement and Protection

8. Rug Pads: Use a rug pad underneath to prevent slipping, provide extra cushioning, and reduce wear and tear.

9. Rotate Regularly: Rotate your rugs every 6 months to a year to ensure even wear and exposure to sunlight, which can cause fading.

10. Sunlight Protection: Keep rugs out of direct sunlight to prevent colors from fading. Use curtains or blinds to limit sun exposure.\

Preventative Measures

11. Shoes Off: Encourage a no-shoes policy indoors to reduce dirt and grime being tracked onto your rugs. In our home I have the kids take off their shoes as soon as they come inside. It definitely helps minimize the amount of dirt.

12. Furniture Protection: Use furniture pads under heavy furniture to prevent dents and damage to the rug fibers.

13. Pet Care: Keep pets’ nails trimmed to avoid snagging the rug fibers. Clean up pet accidents as soon as possible to prevent stains and odors.

Storing Rugs

14. Clean Before Storing: Clean rugs thoroughly before storing to prevent moths and mold.

15. Roll, Don’t Fold: Roll rugs for storage to avoid creases. Store them in a cool, dry place, and use a breathable cover to protect against dust.

By following these care tips, you can keep your area rugs looking vibrant and extend their lifespan.
