Environmentally Conscious on Earth Day...and Every Day

Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world. Established in 1970, Earth Day has become a voice of environmental consciousness, providing a platform for environmental concerns and spurring change for our planet’s benefit.

Homestead Princeton is proud to be the only furniture store recognized as a sustainable business by the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry. Our sustainability practices include repurposing antique barnwood to construct heirloom furniture.

In addition to Homestead’s line of eco-friendly barnwood furniture, we actively seek like-minded environmental-conscious businesses. Homestead has partnered with a local teak producer and planter box manufacturer because of their sustainable farming practices and certifications, harvesting and processing techniques, and the impact of their responsible forestry practices on our environment.  Not only are their planter boxes beautiful and built to last, the story behind them is refreshingly environmentally-focused.

In 1992, Kevin and Christine Yardley, who met while both were studying at Harvard University, bought their first degraded cattle farm and began planting teak.  Today, their plantations protect more than 1000 acres of primary and secondary jungle. The company has seen the impact of logging in the rainforest and the widespread harm that it produces. This is why Kevin and Christine adhere to their strong principles and certify their reforestation to be organic and sustainable.

Kevin and Christine began reforesting trees in 1993. These projects produce clean air and water (more than a thousand people get drinking water from their natural springs) as well as the natural habitats for endangered species such as jaguars, scarlet macaws, and squirrel monkeys. “We also produce Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified woods so that you know these are sustainable. We have chain-of-custody (CoC) certification that keeps track of our wood. Our goal is to reforest the rainforest while making sustainable, long-lasting products. We vow to always respect the Rainforest and plant trees to protect future generations.”

Homestead is proud to partner with environmentally conscious businesses, while continuing to expand our ecological efforts, in-house.  We are committed to a cleaner, safer and healthier environment on Earth Day...and every day.
