Choosing sustainable furniture

Earth Day is an important occasion to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices. When it comes to furniture, there are several options and considerations for choosing sustainable pieces:

  • Material Selection: Opt for furniture made from sustainable materials such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, recycled metal, or FSC-certified wood. These materials minimize the environmental impact by reducing deforestation and promoting responsible sourcing.  We feel strongly about repurposing and reusing sustainable materials such as barnwood or salvaged wood in our custom dining tables.

  • Durability: Choose high-quality, durable furniture that will last longer, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Look for pieces with sturdy construction and timeless designs that won't go out of style.  Durability of our furniture is one thing that makes Homestead Princeton, stand apart from many big box furniture stores.  Our dining tables are solid wood, no veneers.
  • Upcycling and Repurposing: Consider gifts that are made from upcycled or repurposed material. This not only reduces waste but also adds a unique touch to your home decor. We love our indoor/outdoor rugs that are made from recycled bottles.  We also have fun gift items, such as our wine & beer totes, made from upcycled canvas.

  • Local and Artisanal Products: Support local artisans and craftsmen who produce furniture using sustainable practices and locally-sourced materials. This helps reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation and supports the local economy.  We love local artists.  From our local artists, like Jay McPhillips, that paint our ionic images of downtown Princeton to our local honey farmer, we LOVE supporting local.

  • Low-toxicity and Eco-friendly Finishes: Look for furniture finishes and treatments that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals. Eco-friendly finishes, such as natural oils and water-based stains, are safer for both the environment and indoor air quality. Our upholstery companies, such as Rowe Furniture have made a solid commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing processes and sustainable product development.   Rowe’s eco-cushion core contains plant-based, renewable materials which replace significant amounts of petroleum-based materials used in standard foam cushions.  Rowe’s eco-down blend cushion core is a modern combination of high-resiliency foam with recycled fiber and a blend of duck feather and down. The cotton ticking used to encase the feather and down is no longer bleached.

Each piece of Rowe and Robin Bruce furniture will include eco-wood and eco-cushion cores. With your choice of fabrics, you can create a complete eco-friendly piece of furniture.

By considering these options and making conscious choices, you can furnish your home in a way that aligns with Earth Day values and contributes to a more sustainable.  Homestead Princeton is proud to be part of the NJ Sustainable Business Initiative.
