Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Not only is recycling “fashionable,” but it’s just the right thing to do. Here at Homestead Princeton, we have a number of suppliers who love working with salvage - and not just the barnwood tables that we can custom make for you, but tables made from salvaged wood from India:

Each one is, by its very nature, going to be different

How about this beautiful coffee table, made from Indian wedding tables? The patina is second to none and each will be unique -

Ever wonder what happens to your old license plates? They may well end up having new lives as key chains -

We also have a maker who scours building sites and buys bits and pieces that he turns into useful objects like this fabulous mirror, which makes use of old tin ceiling tiles -

Sherwin Williams Color of the Month

Sherwin Williams, one of our favorite paint manufacturers, has selected Primavera SW 9031 as their Color of the Month for August. Here it is in all of its freshness:

It could almost be considered a neutral… See how many colors are shown with it in this roomscape!

We have a touch of this chartreuse-y color here at Homestead Princeton in the form of this fabulous throw pillow by Bella Notte -

A more subdued color than SW 9031 but still a color that will bring a smile to your face every time you see it. Think about it - and maybe introduce some upholstery in a similar color to bring a touch of liveliness to any room.

Congratulations on Your Beach House!

Yay!!! So you’ve finally realized your dream and have bought that house down the shore (if you live in NJ) or that house down at the shore (if you live elsewhere). Now what??? Well, you’ll need to furnish it and accessorize it so that it reflects you, your life style, and your “summer self.” And this is where Homestead Princeton comes in because we’ve got everything you need right here in the store. Here are some ideas for you because we have artwork, signs, area rugs, lighting, candles, maps, poufs, kitchen islands - we even have door mats, all with those coastal colors in mind. Slipcovered sofas, chairs, dining tables, beds, bedding, and window treatments are also available to complete your new home.

"England and America are two countries separated by the same language."

I recently read a fascinating book entitled “When London was Capital of America” by Julie Flavell because, of course, London was our capital back in the 16 and 1700s. Many a politician and wealthy southern plantation owner made regular trips across the sea for culture, clothing, and cachet. And now here we are, surrounded by so much Revolutionary War history, on the cusp of our 243rd anniversary this July 4th. If you’ve been invited to a 4th of July barbecue, picnic, or fireworks party, drop by Homestead Princeton for a host/hostess gift, no matter which “side” you support because we are nothing if not balanced in our selections here at the store!

For the Loyalists among you, we have (please note that the Europe tea towel might be a collector’s item, come the final date for Brexit…):

And for you Patriots, how about:

Other states are available, both as glasses, tea towels, and throw pillows.

Further recommendations for this time of the year - a visit to the Old Barracks Museum in Trenton, Washington’s Crossing on both sides of the Delaware, Rockingham in Rocky Hill, and our very own Princeton Battlefield and State Park, all to get you in the mood for this year’s celebrations.

Title quote is attributed to George Bernard Shaw, although Oscar Wilde in his 1887 story, “The Canterville Ghost” quipped, as he often did, “…we have everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.”

Oops, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Mary Bowden, a graduate of KLC School of Design in America’s old capital city, and a recent recruit to the design team at Homestead Princeton!

A Taste of Home

Ah, summertime in Princeton… Monsoon-like rains mixed with mosquito bites, bottles of chilled rose, family barbecues, trips down the shore, and the bittersweet knowledge that your 12th graders have grown up, graduated, and will be heading all over the country - or the world - in the fall. Fancy a little reminder of home to send them on their way? Local artist Jay McPhillips produces charming prints and original oil paintings of local Princeton institutions - and we’re not just talking University institutions. We’re talking Small World, the Ivy Inn, Hoagie Haven, and Kopp’s Cycles, among others, with each print costing under $20.00 and his original oils starting around $250.00.  Come on by to see Homestead Princeton’s selection of Jay’s work and maybe you’ll end up buying one or two for yourself as well!
